How-To: Create a Dramatic, Tall Floral Arrangement

Decorating, How-To | | | 1 Reply

We love Kiana Underwood’s floral arrangements, and her latest bouquet proves that sometimes bigger is better.

1010_Tulipina122 - Version 2

Kiana writes, “Often people feel that large arrangements are complicated to put together, and should only be left to professionals. This is simply not true, and large arrangements are not any more complicated (and sometimes quite a bit easier) than their smaller counterparts. I hope that after looking at the pictures below, you will give it a try.”

Behind the Design: The Art Nouveau Roots of Our Peacock Salad Plates

Behind the Design, Behind the Scenes | | | Leave a comment

Ever wonder what inspired the design of some of your favorite Pottery Barn products? In our Behind the Design series of posts, we talk with Pottery Barn designers to learn how they were inspired to create Pottery Barn pieces. You can read all of the posts in the Behind the Design series here. Today, we’re learning more about the Peacock Porcelain Salad Plates.

Made of porcelain with an on-glaze decal, these plates are sold as a set of four and are microwave- and dishwasher-safe. We think they’d add a great layer of pattern to the Great White dishes set.

We chatted with Pottery Barn tabletop designer Tony to learn more about the history of this lush imagery. Tony told us, “The peacock is a replication of a portion an old art nouveau decorator fabric. It is English and the pattern most likely dates back to about the 1890s.”

Spotted: Our Accordion Lights in a Gorgeous Washington Cottage

Decorating, Decorating Inspiration, Inspiration | | | 1 Reply

We recently spotted the Pottery Barn Bristol Accordion Floor Lamps on an Apartment Therapy tour. The scale, size and surprise factor of the lamps certainly adds a wow factor to this gorgeous cottage, owned by Rick Rochon of Ludlow Co. We got in touch with Rick to learn a little more about this cottage and his design choices. (1)
When we asked Rick about why he chose these lamps, he told us,  “When designing the space I needed a versatile and tall lamp that could create ambient light for the space and brighter, direct light for reading and computer work.  This space is mutlifunctional.  The Bristol lamp is tall, substantial and very well made and we were thrilled when we got them in place.”

Looking for a floor lamp? While the Bristol Accordion Floor Lamp is no longer available, you can check out our entire selection of floor lamps here. Below, we’re also sharing five of our current favorite floor lamp options.

Before and After: An Incredible Summer Patio Transformation

Decorating, Decorating Inspiration, Inspiration | | | 20 Replies

Jonathan Stiers, a graphic designer and writer behind The Stiers Aesthetic, recently sent us an incredible before and after patio transformation.

Believe it or not, this was the before photo Jonathan sent us of the space!

How did you have the vision to know that this outdoor space could be transformed into something great?

I originally started with two lonely outdoor chairs. While quaint, they seemed dwarfed by the space – which was not conducive to entertaining more than one guest. I wanted something inviting – something that would command attention and make you want to spend time there. Since the breezeway opens directly from east to west, it benefits from exposure to beautiful sunlight in the morning and evening, but I knew outdoor curtains were a must to help diffuse the light and take some of the brunt of the summer heat, as well as completing my vision to transform the breezeway in to a private cabana.

Where exactly is this outdoor space located in your home?

The breezeway is directly behind my house, separating it from the garage.

How did you use Pottery Barn products in the transformation?

I knew I wanted a sectional and had been searching for the right one to bring a little elegance to an unused space. I also wanted something that could withstand the elements but not require a lot of extra care, beyond covering it up and putting it away. The black, all-weather Palmetto Sectional seemed perfect and had that crisp, clean, elegant look I wanted. I love the contrast of the ivory cushions against the black wicker in addition to the timeless black and white awning stripe pillows. The Outdoor Canvas Grommet Drape and Round Finial Drape Rods worked perfectly for the space. With the curtains drawn, the entire space is filled with a beautiful warm glow. The curtains are durable, yet light enough to catch a light breeze, bringing movement and life to the space. I am in love with my Indoor Flameless Pillar Candles so I knew the Outdoor Pillars were a must. With the timer feature, the space comes to life every evening, making it almost impossible to resist. The globe topiary and mercury vase add life, texture and nice pop of color, too.

What do your friends say about this space now?

They couldn’t believe the difference and love how inviting the space is now. One commented that it feels like you’re miles away in a spa vacation spot!

How do you like to use this space?

I love enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning, and a glass of wine in the evenings, here. The gained additional seating has been great for outdoor entertaining. I couldn’t be more happy with the transformation. The ambiance lures people outside, bringing everyone together, just as I hoped it would.
