Fresh Winter Flowers for Everyday Entertaining

Floral designer Kiana Underwood of San Francisco-based Tulipina recently put together a fresh bouquet of winter flowers, with a soft palette inspired by our Tuscan Urn.

Instead of standard poinsettas or evergreen branches, Underwood used amaryllis as the centerpiece for her design.  These winter-flowering bulbs have beautiful, showy flowers in a variety of colors. Underwood chose a warm white amaryllis at her local flower market. Autumn foliage, eucalyptus and other seasonal foliage makes the arrangement feel appropriate for the holidays, despite the muted colors.

Here’s what you’ll need to recreate Underwood’s lovely holiday display:

  1. Place eucalpytus and other autumn foliage in the urn first.

2. Add your euphorbia, layering different heights.

3. Add a bit of color with some roses. Make sure they’re visible within the existing arrangement. Underwood used a subtle green-eyed yellow rose from Torchio Nursery’s booth at the San Francisco Flower Mart.

4. Add the ranunculus to balance out the display.

5. Lastly, add the amaryllis. Underwood only used two stems, but since each stem has 3 to 4 flowers, it filled up the vase nicely.

Voila! The result is a holiday flower display that can be kept out all season and still feels subtly festive without using red and green.
