Eating well in a dorm cafeteria can be a challenge, but establishing a healthy routine is so important when adjusting to life in college. Here are a few of my favorite tips for eating healthier on campus!

1)   Get creative.

The cafeteria offers more than what you see on the menu – you just have to scout it out!

  • Mix and match: Rather than grabbing a pre-prepared meal, I like to mix and match. Grilled chicken and veggies taste great with raw foods from the salad bar.
  • Add protein: I also like adding protein to my salad. Tofu, plain grilled chicken and eggs are some of my favorites – they’re full of protein and taste like whatever dressing or sauce I put on top.

2)   Snack.

Instead of one large meal in the dining hall to last you through the day, keep small snacks in your bag for between meals. Cold vegetables, fruit and granola bars are great options. I go to the grocery store once a week to stock up on things that hold me over until my next real meal. Some of my favorites include hummus, edamame, yogurt, nuts and string cheese.

3)   Replace dessert.

Cookies and cake are tasty, but better left for just once in a while! When craving sweets, I try fruit instead – or I grab a spoonful of peanut butter or a few chocolate chips from the ice cream bar to help curb my sweet tooth.

I’d love to hear your tips for eating healthy in the dorms, so be sure to comment below!
