Hello, there! My name is Monika, the voice behind the fashion and lifestyle blog The Doctor’s Closet. I’m so honored and excited to be taking over the Pottery Barn Kids blog today. The topic: everything neutral for baby – your sweet boy AND your darling girl!

If you follow my blog, you know I’m a lover of everything white and neutral. My entire home pretty much sings this melody! I love a clean, bright, airy room that has a splash of character.

When I became a mom to my son, Liam, and started designing his nursery, I had no idea what to expect. All I knew is I didn’t want the typical, crazy, overly colorful and packed kid’s room! I wanted it to be clean and simple, but at the same time, I wanted a cozy, inviting, comfortable space. In my mind, this translated to one thing: neutral!

Now, don’t be scared – neutral doesn’t have to mean boring. To me, neutral colors are classic, warm and sophisticated, and they can play an integral role in designing a gorgeous space to soothe your sweet baby.

The best part: it’s so simple to switch out one thing here and one thing there, so you can constantly refresh your look. Whether it’s a Moroccan pouf on the floor or a magnificent stag head on the wall, a neutral palette offers the perfect backdrop to let you have fun and get creative. Trust me when I say: you’re safe with neutrals!

Here are my top 10 essentials to help you get started designing a nursery:

1. A crib to help set the tone of the space.
2. Beautiful statement lighting that’s soft, soothing and gentle.
3. A side table to display keepsakes.
4. A rocker, glider or simply a classic chair for feeding, rocking and bonding with your baby.
5. Crib bedding that works with your nursery’s overall design (I love the look of linen).
6. Baskets for storing essentials: toys, blankets, diapers, etc.
7. A bassinet for naps and downtime.
8. A dresser and changing table to make diaper changes easier.
9. Wall art, frames, pictures and books to add some creativity.
10. Blackout drapes to make sleeping more sound.

Being a complete minimalist, I don’t like clutter or a busy room. I like simple, clean and put away – and these items have helped make that happen in Liam’s nursery. I wouldn’t change a thing! (Well, maybe I’d add a dash of pink if a little girl comes along…)

Happy nursery decorating! Keep an eye out for the July issue of Style at Home magazine to see Liam’s nursery feature!
