Today’s DIY was created for us by one of our very favorite bloggers, Chelsea of Lovely Indeed. So without further ado, a holiday how-to from Chelsea!
Hi PBteen, it’s Chelsea from Lovely Indeed! Around the holidays, I love anything that is super cozy with a little extra shimmer. That’s why I’m loving this little bohemian holiday garland – it’s got a bit of everything! You can just gather up any supplies that you have in your craft stash and go to town. And the best part is that you can put your own stamp on it with a little personalization. Make the message read anything you like, from “Happy Holidays” to “Let it Snow!” Use it to deck your room, give it to your bestie as a gift, or put it up on the mantle for everyone to enjoy. Here’s how to get started…
Supplies
- Baker’s twine
- Yarn
- Die-cut letters (pre-glittered for extra sparkle!)
- Scissors
- Pompom maker
- Glue gun
- Decorative ribbons
- Holiday stickers
- Tinsel or other shimmery decorations
Step 1: From the letters, pick out the phrase you’d like to spell. Flip the letters so that they’re face-down, and arrange them in reverse order. Cut a length of twine to the length you’d like your garland. 36” is probably a good place to start.
Step 2: Place a small dot of hot glue on the back of each letter and sink the twine into the glue, being sure the letters are evenly spaced. Check every so often that you’re spelling your phrase correctly!
Step 3: Start decorating the rest of the garland. Make a few pompoms first. Wrap yarn around each side of the pompom maker until the arms are full. Cut the yarn down the center of each side. With a 6” length of yarn, wrap it through the center of the pompom maker and double knot it around the other side. Open the arms and separate the pompom maker to reveal your pompom! (The maker should come with these directions as well). Make a few more for good measure.
Step 4: Make some yarn tassels! Wrap yarn around your hand loosely until there are about 30 loops. Slip the yarn off of your hand and around a pencil or pen. Tie the yarn in place at the top with a 6” length of extra yarn, and snip through the loops at the bottom. You’ve got a tassel!
Step 5: Slip the tassels onto the twine and arrange them where you’d like. Then tie on a few pompoms here and there.
Step 6: Continue adding bits and pieces of your other materials onto your twine. There’s no wrong way to do it! I used other pieces like braided yarn, sparkly snowflake stickers (sandwich the twine between the stickers), and silver ribbon folded over the twine and secured with a dot of hot glue.
Step 7: Once you’re satisfied with all of the goodies on your garland, tie a loop at either end so you have a way to hang it.
Hang up your garland and have a very festive holiday season!
