Birthday Surprise DIY

Looking for a fun DIY for your BFF’s Birthday? We have just the thing from Simply Poised Fashion, featuring some of our new Emily and Meritt designs. Take it away Rachel!

As my friends’ birthdays approach, I always contemplate what thoughtful gift I can create this year. I always love having a handmade gift in addition to one or two extra statement pieces. Necklaces have been an accessory I have been making and selling for years in a variety of styles, but I am going to show how to make the tassel design today.

Supplies:

Embroidery Thread

Variety of Porcelain Beads (variety in sizes is great too in order to have statement beads)

Scissors

Instructions:

To make the tassel, you wrap the embroidery thread around your fingers to desired thickness. I change the thickness based on the beads I have and how delicate they are. For this one, I went with medium thickness!

Cut the thread and start to wrap around the top, about 1/4″ down, to create the loop for the necklace to string though. Once it is at the width you prefer, tie it in a knot and cut.

Next, you cut the big loops at the bottom to finalize the tassel. I always go in with scissors after to even out all the strings to perfect the tassel.

For the string that you will put the beads on, I usually make it arms length and trim away the excess at the end (better to be safe than sorry)! As far as the bead pattern goes, I usually get 3-4 different types of beads that complement each other and create a cohesive look. For this one, I did a gold accent bead, bigger teal bead, then 10 smaller teal beads, then repeated that 4x on each side!

After that, you tie it off (2 or 3 times to be extra safe) and you are done! If you want to add an extra fun touch, try adding one or two knots between every bead- it adds character and extra length.

For one of my best friend’s birthdays approaching shortly, I am going to pair this with the adorable patterned garland and place them both in this gold bow box (which I adore!!!) for a glamorous touch.

As you create gifts and decor, always remember that adding your special touch/twist makes everything sweeter! Try framing cute cards for a friend’s birthday or creating their favorite accessory to pair with your gift box! As I move into my new office and room, I am always on the lookout for new items to add a nice extra touch!
