Set A Spooky Scene: A DIY Halloween Puppet Theater

Written by Joel Henriques of Made by Joel for Building Blocks.

Finger puppets have always been a favorite craft with my family. The kids love using their creativity to design new puppets, but they also get to continue using their imaginations as they act out stories with each character. We can spend hours around the table crafting, acting and entertaining each other for some fun family time!

For this set of puppets, we also created a Halloween puppet theater out of a used cereal box. It turned out to be quite an inspiring prop for some hilarious impromptu Halloween skits.

Follow the simple instructions below to create your own Halloween puppets and theater!

Halloween Puppet Theater

You will need:

  • Empty Cereal Box
  • Pencil or Pen
  • Scissors or Craft Knife
  • Black Paint and a Paintbrush
  • Coloring Supplies (optional)

Step 1: Cut an empty cereal box down the side so it opens flat.

Step 2: Draw a haunted house using your own design (kids can draw it too!), or use the template.

Step 3: Cut the house out using scissors and or craft knife.

Step 4: Paint or color the house any color you’d like. I used black paint, but you could also just use pens or crayons.

Step 5: Once it’s finished, you can stand up the house by folding it slightly along the folds that were in the cereal box.

You will need:

  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Coloring Supplies (optional)

Step 1: On a piece of paper, draw puppets using your own design or print out the template. (You can use colored or white paper, then let the kids color them with pens or crayons too.)

Step 2: Cut the puppets out with scissors.

Step 3: Roll the paper back until it overlaps a little, then secure it with tape. (I like to use double sided clear tape, but any tape will work.)

Step 4: Start the show!

Happy Halloween, everyone!
