Tips For Creating an Art Collection From One of Our Experts

Decorating, How-To and tagged , | | | Leave a comment

Have you resolved to add more artwork to your home in 2013? It’s an admirable resolution. Artwork adds personality to a home and reflects the homeowner’s sensibilities, style and passion. But if you haven’t yet begun an art collection, it often seems a bit intimidating to start. Luckily, we brought in an expert to help you discover the easiest way to add artwork to your home.  Alexia, one of Pottery Barn’s art buyers, has provided her favorite tips and tricks on starting a collection of art.

Artwork is Personal. “It’s an expression of who you are. It gives any room a personal touch as art often evokes a memory, emotion and certainly becomes the conversation piece of any room! I think the personal connection to art is what makes it so important to invest in and collect.”

Alexia’s biggest tip. “The biggest tip is to buy what you love and art naturally finds its place in your home. It doesn’t have to be a perfect match.”

Styling several pieces or art at once. “If a customer is trying to create a gallery or themed moment, here are some great tips.

When to decorate with calming art: “For a bedroom or living room space it’s best to decorate with calming art as those are the more peaceful rooms of the home – landscapes or images of nature work well here.

When to decorate with more frenetic art. “For the dining room or kitchen, which are usually the hub of bustle and conversation, I like to take more risks there with both color and theme – abstract art or pops of color are always fun in these rooms, as well as travel-inspired imagery.”

Why you should invest in original art. “With original art you are truly investing in something that is one of a kind, and that makes it very special. It also creates a sort of relationship between you and the artist as an artist puts so much of themselves into a piece when a buyer responds to it and purchases it that bridge is built between them. I think Stephanie’s video on original art speaks to buying art you love well,  and the connection between artist and buyer is well said by Michal Venera.”

Why Alexia loves Pottery Barn’s artist partnership. “What is great about our artist partnership is that we are creating a sort of art community within our brand, providing a platform for both new and emerging artists and seasoned artists we love to share their inspiration with our customers and come together to create a really well curated collection of eclectic art for our customers. We span across multiple subject matters and mediums to hopefully provide a diverse and exciting experience!”

Discover the Perfect Home Office For Small Spaces With These Tips

Decorating, How-To and tagged , , | | | Leave a comment

As many people’s workspaces become increasingly mobile, an office space is often an essential feature in one’s home. But what if you don’t have an entire room to dedicate to a home office? There are plenty of options, provided you choose your home office furniture carefully and follow a few smart tips. There’s absolutely no need to relegate a home office to an entire room, especially if you’re trying to curate the perfect home office for small spaces. We’re positive that there’s a space in your home that can be rearranged to create room for a stylish, multitasking home office space. Check out our tips below.

Look at your home with a fresh eye. Is there a corner of your living room or guest bedroom that could accommodate a desk? How about the space where a console might usually fit? We’ve visited some homes where an entry has also housed a desk quite handsomely. Think creatively about your space and how it can work harder for you.

Standard office chairs need not (necessarily) apply. By using a dining room chair, stool, or side chair, you can add fewer furniture pieces to your home. When you aren’t using your desk, the chair can move to another spot in the room. Bonus: a dining chair or side chair is usually much more elegant than an office chair anyway.

Seek out chameleons when it comes to your desk. Secretary desks are a perfect small-space desk. We also love desks that can serve as console tables, entry tables or display areas when they’re not in use. These desks are much easier to integrate into a dining room, living room, guest room or entry.

Style your desk. By adding elements such as candles, a handsome table lamp, favorite art books and journals, your desk can transform itself in to a beautiful vignette in the room where it is housed, making the addition seem more natural.

Accessorize and organize. Keep needed work tools such as laptop, power cords, files and other items hidden away in drawers or baskets. Pencils, pens and paper clips can look lovely when housed in a pretty vase or jar.

Follow These Tips to Gift Wrap Like a Pro

Entertaining, Holiday and tagged , , | | | 5 Replies

Want to make your gifts look gorgeous this year? We caught up with Pottery Barn’s resident gift wrapping expert, Sean, to get his tips and tricks for creating your best-looking holiday gifts ever.

Sean’s Top Tips

• “Don’t use a gift bag! Even a simple gift looks better wrapped in paper and tied with ribbon or twine.”

• “Using the right materials makes giftwrapping easy. A metal ruler for measuring and cutting paper; a rotary cutter for clean, easy cuts with a straight edge and double-stick tape to ensure everything stays in it’s place and out of sight.”

• “Measuring the paper to fit the box ensures all folds stay crisp and neat. ”

• “Once the box is wrapped use your thumb and index finger to crease all edges for a crisp, clean look.

• “Ensure that the two triangular flaps on each side of the box meet in the middle and face in the same direction.”

• “When tying a four-way bow, ensure the ribbon on the bottom lays flat and isn’t twisted.” (Find a tutorial for tying a bow here.)

• “Don’t forget to embellish your gift! A simple topper like an evergreen branch or holiday ornament is an easy and festive way to finish off the perfect gift wrap.”

Ready to wrap? You can also check out the slideshow below to discover a unique way to wrap pesky round presents like candles. You can also download a variety of PDF tags similar to the one Sean used below.

A Romantic, California-Inspired Holiday Beach Fantasy

Decorating, Holiday, Inspiration and tagged , , , | | | 10 Replies

When we came across this gorgeous beachy holiday scene from designer Lindye Galloway, we thought it was an absolutely fun twist on the standard Christmas tree decorating scheme. Using a cream and gold color scheme,  Lindye created a dramatic holiday-inspired romantic vignette. The white tree, decorated in gold and sequined ornaments, seems doubly inspiring thanks to its unexpected beach setting.

The tree is covered in gold and sequined ornaments, while a variety of color-coordinated gifts surround the base. The gifts all feature custom gift tags — an easy idea to re-create at home, if you’re so inclined.

Lindye also created an intimate beachy tablescape for the photo shoot, building a custom table out of logs. The incredible floral centerpiece was designed by Megan Gray of Honey and Poppies. We checked in with Megan to discover how she created this gorgeous and dramatic floral centerpiece.

Megan told us, “I designed the centerpiece to complement the other decor elements designed by Lindye Galloway.  I knew she was going to be using earthy elements along with a bit of festive sparkle and cozy textures, and I wanted the flowers to reflect that same feeling.  To be natural but sophisticated, and feel warm and inviting at the same time.  I love the idea that your flowers for any party should complement your home decor while being appropriate for the season.”

For this look, Megan started with a warm-hued wooden box and embellished it with gold sequin trim.  “We then created a floral arrangement that was festive and romantic using whites and neutrals along with fragrant evergreen branches,” Megan noted. “The centerpiece consisted of white garden roses, peonies, lisianthus, lysimachia, pieris, yarrow, golden hued roses (called Combo), boughs of cedar, juniper, and douglas fir, and finally protea resembling tiny pine cones.”

If you’re interested in trying to capture the spirit of this centerpiece Megan explains that you could achieve a similar feel with a variety of different flowers. “The key is making sure that you have a mix of larger, fluffier white focal flowers along with smaller textured ones to add movement and interest, and also to let your evergreens be a little loose and wild,” Megan explained. “I love metallics and neutrals for Christmas, and including small accents of golden hues in with your flowers is a wonderful way to get that look. It creates a warmer and more inviting palette than the traditional all white. Cream colored roses or even painted gold pine cones would give a similar feel too.”

Inspired to try a gold and cream holiday color palette this year? We certainly are!
