5 Makeup Kit Tips from Blush Bar, Plus a Giveaway!

ADVICE and tagged , | | | Leave a comment

Wondering what you’ll need in your makeup bag on the big day? Nicole Nguyen, lead makeup artist and hairstylist of Blush Bar, shared her makeup must-haves for putting together the perfect wedding day kit. Take a look at her five tips below!

I never leave a bride stranded without a few essential items in her touch-up kit. I love Pottery Barn’s Stripe Cosmetic Pouch — is the perfect size for an emergency makeup kit! Here’s what you’ll need:

1. Extra Bobby Pins: For stray hairs and fallen hemlines. Having a few extra of these will come in handy!

2. Touch up Lipstick or Gloss: A bride needs lips! While I would suggest an all day wear color, touching up after the ‘I do’ is a necessity.

3. Extra Powder: Brides put makeup to the test on their wedding day. It can smudge and smear, leaving a bride shiny between tears, dancing, and lots of congratulatory hugs. Powder battles the shine, freshens the skin, and makes a gal picture perfect once again.

4. Pen Concealer or Highlighter: This is often overlooked, but is a must. It fixes under eye smudges and can act as a lip liner (outside the natural line of the lip), and can be used to spot cover instantly. After emotional speeches and wedding vows, don’t be caught without it.

5. Beauty Blender Sponge or Wedge Sponge: I would highly suggest keeping a beauty blender or wedge sponge for clean ups in your kit! Wet, they can reapply a concealer thinly in the areas brides tend to get red post cry (around the nose and eyes), and can gently blend any tear marks left behind. Dry, they can be used to absorb oil and reapply powder.

Feeling fancy or generous? Create one of these kits as gifts in the Pottery Barn Alphabet Pouch for each of your bridesmaids with her initials, or give her the Leopard Brush Pouch with a few of your favorite brushes.

INNA Jam on Instagram: Learn More About One of the Local Companies Featured in Our Easter Giveaways

Behind the Scenes, We Love SF and tagged , , | | | 2 Replies

Later this week, we’re giving away an Easter basket to one lucky winner. Chock full of Pottery Barn Easter decor and tabletop items, this Easter basket will also include Easter brunch-inspired edibles from local San Francisco companies. Today we’re getting to know INNA Jam, one of the local companies featured in our giveaway. Since INNA Jam is on Instagram, we thought it would be fun to get to know the company through some of its delicious-looking Instagram photos.

Founded by Dafna Kory, INNA Jam makes fresh, seasonal jams from fruit sourced within 150 miles of its San Francisco Bay Area kitchen. By sourcing produce directly from local organic farmers, INNA Jam is able to use the ripest, freshest fruits for its jams. INNA Jam specializes in single-varietal jams, which means it only use a single type of fruit for each jam — no herbs, spices or other flavorings are used in the jam, only single varietal fruit. INNA Jam is also an environmentally sustainable business. Employees transport and deliver jam on bicycles in the Bay Area. The company also accepts returns of empty jam jars and it composts the scraps from its Emeryville kitchen.

INNA Jam is also offering a variety of shrubs this spring. Shrub, originally from the Middle East and West Africa, became popular in the U.S. in the colonial era, and can be thought of as essentially a fruit-vinegar-sugar syrup. Try it mixed with sparkling water or as a cocktail ingredient.

This year, INNA Jam won a Good Food Award in the category of Preserves. Well deserved! (As you can see INNA also makes some spicy jams, too.)

We’re eager to try this INNA Jam combination: buttermilk vanilla cake with freshly made ruby grapefruit jam.

INNA Jam just released its salt-preserved meyer lemon pickles. Since they’re refrigerated, you can only buy them directly from INNA Jam’s Emeryville kitchen.

Don’t forget to check back later this week for our Easter basket giveaway, which includes a variety of INNA Jam flavors.

Discover San Franola, One of the Local Companies Featured in Our San Francisco Easter Giveaway

Behind the Scenes, We Love SF and tagged , , | | | 1 Reply

Later this week, we’re giving away a fun Easter basket chock full of Pottery Barn Easter decor and tabletop items as well as some great Easter brunch-inspired edibles from local San Francisco companies. Make sure to keep checking back to enter the giveaway! Today, though, we’re getting to know one of those local companies featured in our giveaway. Meet Matt and Dave, who founded San Franola Granola after being inspired by Dave’s father’s quest for better health (that’s them with Dave’s dad in the photo below.

Matt and Dave answered a few interview questions for us about their company’s story and why they love living in the San Francisco Bay Area.

San Franola’s proprietary recipe took 12 years to develop.  Can you give us a bit of background?

It started with Dave’s Dad.  Inspired by his goal to improve his health, he was determined to create a healthy and nutritious snack.  For 12 years he experimented and tinkered with a new granola recipe.  Most granola is baked in butter and sugar, what if there was a way to capture amazing flavor and heighten the nutritional benefits?  A family recipe was born and it worked so well that it convinced two best friends to quit their traditional jobs and bring a healthy crunch to snacking.

Can you tell us a little about your granola’s unique taste?

Freshly Roasted makes a difference.  Other brands develop their flavor profile by baking in butter, flour and sugar, our unique process combined with natural ingredients including almonds, oats, cinnamon and molasses creates a rich, robust taste and big, crunchy clusters.

Why is San Franola so much better for you than other granolas?

Our Freshly Roasted recipe allows us to take out the bad (less sugar, butter and flower) and put in the good (10 grams of protein plus higher fiber than other brands).

Untitled 3

How did you choose your different granola varieties?

With our distinctive and robust taste, we didn’t want to overcomplicate things.  Our recipe stands for itself.  We have two versions, With Raisins or Without Raisins and two packages, our 12 oz. re-sealable bag (perfect for the kitchen) and our 1.55 oz. Single-Serve Box (designed for on-the-go healthy snacking).

What is it like to work with your best friend?

We have always been active, our friendship started in third grade on the soccer field.  Being fitness minded, it is no surprise we started a company designed to make snacking more nutritious.  This is not just a business, but a passion, which is made even more rewarding by sharing the successes (and the challenges) with someone you trust completely.

Why did you name your product San Franola?

The Bay Area epitomizes the principles of the brand: nutrition, active lifestyle, and entrepreneurship.  We get more inspired and passionate each day that we walk around our hometown.

What is your favorite thing about the Bay Area?

Innovation.  Growing up here creates a can-do mentality, not just in tech, but in the food space as well.  We are constantly stimulated and rewarded by other entrepreneurs who share our mission in making better nutrition more delicious and accessible to all.

Make sure to check back later this week for a chance to win our Easter basket giveaway, which includes four packages of San Franola Granola.
