Halloween isn’t just for Kids!

Entertaining, Holiday, Recipes, Uncategorized and tagged , , , , , | | | 2 Replies

One of our favorite parts about Halloween, aside from the tasty treats, is sipping on a festive cocktail as we prepare our costumes for the night.  This year you’ll find us indulging in these Spiked Mexican Hot Chocolates made with Don Julio Tequila and the spices of the season.

We love how Mandy Kellogg Rye from Waiting on Martha has added some black magic to the cocktail with Ancho Chili Powder and Cayenne Pepper to give it a spicy kick and a bold devilish taste! Click here see what else makes this spooka-licious drink extraordinary.

Styling Your Media Center with Art

ADVICE & INSPIRATION, Decorating, Decorating Inspiration, Inspiration, Uncategorized | | | Leave a comment

We’re back with Ashley Pepitone from Camp Makery to help you with tips for a fall bedroom refresh! This time she takes on the media center to create a clean fresh look with art and decor.

Televisions in the bedroom. I know. There’s that old saying, “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.” That’s always kind of been my decorating motto, especially when it comes to electronics. We also have a television over our fireplace (horrors!) but there really wasn’t anywhere else to put it and let’s be honest– we use the television! A lot! So that begs the question: How do you “join ’em” and make your television fit into your décor, while avoiding a frat house chic look?

Camp Makery Media Center Makeover

It’s all about the gallery wall, my friends. Gallery walls are everywhere on Pinterest, design blogs, even your beloved PB catalog. As common as they are, tackling how exactly to make a good one come to life can be daunting and expensive. Here are my tips for working with electronics in a gallery wall.

1. Set the electronics lower than most of the art. If you can place your television at your seated (or prone position) eye level, that is best. Not only does it make you more comfortable while viewing, it takes some of the focus off of the television while you’re standing.

2. Work in some pieces that are at least as big as the electronics. If your TV is absolutely huge and this just isn’t an option, work a grouping in that are cohesive and give the look of one work of art. Here I used four of my Instagram prints, framed by the incredible team at Framebridge. Just make sure they are all the same size and framed in the same way and you will get the same effect as a larger piece.

3. Choose pieces that have meaning to you; Priceless doesn’t mean expensive. I paid very little for all of the art in my gallery wall. Again, the four photos are Instagram snaps of my baby girls. The paintings on the left and right are watercolors that I painted myself, framed using hardware store acrylic and brass findings!

Styling Your Media Center

4. Invest in beautiful frames. Not every frame in your gallery has to be pricey, but if you use quality frames and mats your art will always look better. No matter whether it’s a valuable painting or a photo booth strip from a carnival.

5. Don’t be afraid to DIY. Try your hand at watercolors, like I did, or let your kiddos have at it with fingerpaints that coordinate with your color scheme. Whatever it is, make sure it’s personal and suits you before you worry about it suiting the room. And if you love that DIY acrylic frame, here’s the how-to!

You will need:

  • Two sheets of acrylic/plexiglass
  • Four brass nuts
  • Four brass bolts
  • Lighter
  • Nail
  • Pliers
  • Double-sided tape
  • Picture hanging wire

Have your local hardware store cut down the plexiglass to your preferred size. Make sure to leave at least a 2″ border around whatever art you plan to frame. Remove the protective film from the plexiglass. Holding the nail with the pliers, carefully heat over flame until it is red-hot. Press into the plexiglass at the four corners. Make two more holes on just the piece of plexi that you will face the wall, about halfway down and where they will be hidden by your art. Thread your wire through and secure. Center your art and sandwich between the plexi, holding in place with the double-sided tape on the wall-facing sheet of plexi. Secure with your nuts and bolts.

3 Simple and Delicious Fall Cocktail Recipes

Entertaining, Parties, Recipes, Uncategorized | | | 3 Replies

Throughout the month of October select Pottery Barn stores will be hosting mixology 101 sessions with sisters Jordan Catapano and Jocelyn Dunn Muhlbach from This Girl Walks Into A Bar. The duo recently published their new cocktail book, Cocktails for Cougars and Cowgirls!  Jordan and Jocelyn will be sharing their impressive mixology skills and easy to make recipes to serve at your upcoming seasonal parties!

To give you a “sip” of their creativity, we sat down with the two sisters and asked a few questions to get you ready for your next event.

November Dream MartiniClick here for the recipe to this November Dream Martini served in our PB Classic Barware.

Why did you select the title Cougars & Cowgirls for your newest cocktail recipe book?

There is no “type” of woman that wants to make great cocktails and entertain successfully at home. There are twenty-one years olds and sixty-one year olds, executives and stay-at-home moms, mixology novices and spirit experts who have helped us to shape our own identity as a brand.

What is your favorite fall ingredient that you like to include in your cocktails?

We’re a little crazy about cinnamon and orange zest, and love to incorporate these two ingredients whenever we can. Whether it’s bourbon, vodka, or tequila, these two small and flavorful additions always bring something new to the mix.

Mulled Wine Recipe

Click here for their Mulled Wine Recipe served in our Colorful Café Glassware.

What inspires you and influences your work?

We are craving cocktails with brown spirits such as bourbon, whiskey, anejo, scotch, mezcal, etc. Seasonal fruits and herbs also play a big part in our approach to a drink. Our goal is always to present recipes that someone can make at home without much hassle.

What is your signature cocktail that you have created?

It’s hard to chose a favorite, but The First Lady is definitely in the top ten. The combination of a little gin, limoncello, blueberry simple syrup and lemon juice in a flute filled with Brut is so delicious. Because of all the bubbly, it looks like a delicate drink but it’s actually quite complex and according to some, on the strong side.

Afternoon Delight

Click here for their Afternoon Delight recipe made in our Pumpkin Drink Dispenser and served in our Pumpkin Glassware.

Do you have any advice for future mixologists?

Be adventurous! If you get a crazy idea for a drink, try it out. When it comes to mixology, it’s more about balance and less about what “should” go into a cocktail. And remember that your drink doesn’t need a lot of ingredients or even adjectives (forget the organically infused, barrel-aged tequila) to taste amazing. Sometimes less is more.

Easy & Adorable Coaster DIY

Looking to add a special touch to a shower or bachelorette party? We’re loving this adorable do-it-yourself project from the girls at Inspired By This. Follow their 3 easy steps and you’ll have the perfect decorative accent in no time.Easy & Adorable Coaster DIY

Written by Inspired By This and republished for Have and Hold.

These drink coasters are the perfect fit and easy enough for an afternoon DIY! Pick your pattern and your paint and you’re all set! It really is as easy as it sounds! We love this gold and white combination on the cork background, making the coasters fit easily into any space or entertaining decor. This is a fun, cute way to get exactly what you want with just an inexpensive trip to the craft store! And when all your friends ask about them, you can proudly claim them as your own! After you’ve made them for yourself, spend just 5 minutes more to give as the perfect hostess gift!

Paint brushes
Sponge circle brush
Painters tape
White paint
Gold spray paint
Cork squares

Easy & Adorable Coaster DIY

Step 1

Place the painters tape on the cork squares in the desired pattern.  This might require you to cut the tape in half to get thinner lines.  Feel free to try anything and everything…this is where you get to be creative!  Press the tape hard into the cork so no paint can seep through (this is especially important when trying to get crisp stripes).

Easy & Adorable Coaster DIYEasy & Adorable Coaster DIY

Step 2

Paint the exposed cork with either a white paint or the gold spray paint.  Make sure to coat the entire surface evenly.  You will probably want to give the paint a couple of layers to make the color really stand out against the cork!

Easy & Adorable Coaster DIY

Step 3

Once the paint is dry to the touch, gently peel the painters tape off of the cork squares.  Make sure to go slowly, you don’t want to pull pieces of the cork up!  With lines we recommend waiting a little longer than necessary to ensure the paint doesn’t bleed.  That’s it!  Now you have some fun drink coasters that are sure to impress all of your guests!
