Throughout the month of October select Pottery Barn stores will be hosting mixology 101 sessions with sisters Jordan Catapano and Jocelyn Dunn Muhlbach from This Girl Walks Into A Bar. The duo recently published their new cocktail book, Cocktails for Cougars and Cowgirls! Jordan and Jocelyn will be sharing their impressive mixology skills and easy to make recipes to serve at your upcoming seasonal parties!
To give you a “sip” of their creativity, we sat down with the two sisters and asked a few questions to get you ready for your next event.

Why did you select the title Cougars & Cowgirls for your newest cocktail recipe book?
There is no “type” of woman that wants to make great cocktails and entertain successfully at home. There are twenty-one years olds and sixty-one year olds, executives and stay-at-home moms, mixology novices and spirit experts who have helped us to shape our own identity as a brand.
What is your favorite fall ingredient that you like to include in your cocktails?
We’re a little crazy about cinnamon and orange zest, and love to incorporate these two ingredients whenever we can. Whether it’s bourbon, vodka, or tequila, these two small and flavorful additions always bring something new to the mix.

What inspires you and influences your work?
We are craving cocktails with brown spirits such as bourbon, whiskey, anejo, scotch, mezcal, etc. Seasonal fruits and herbs also play a big part in our approach to a drink. Our goal is always to present recipes that someone can make at home without much hassle.
What is your signature cocktail that you have created?
It’s hard to chose a favorite, but The First Lady is definitely in the top ten. The combination of a little gin, limoncello, blueberry simple syrup and lemon juice in a flute filled with Brut is so delicious. Because of all the bubbly, it looks like a delicate drink but it’s actually quite complex and according to some, on the strong side.

Do you have any advice for future mixologists?
Be adventurous! If you get a crazy idea for a drink, try it out. When it comes to mixology, it’s more about balance and less about what “should” go into a cocktail. And remember that your drink doesn’t need a lot of ingredients or even adjectives (forget the organically infused, barrel-aged tequila) to taste amazing. Sometimes less is more.
