Instant Bedroom Refresh with Julie Blanner of Coordinately Yours

Decorating, How-To | | | 3 Replies

Sometimes the smallest change can make the biggest difference. That’s what we love about this bedroom refresh from Julie Blanner of Coordinately Yours. Armed with a soft new throw and one of our favorite brass accent lamps, Julie gave her bedroom a mini-refresh without spending too much time (or money!). The cozy throw and warm light are perfect for the cold winter nights to come!

Autumn exudes an amazing variety of colorful and textural plants and flowers — the possibilities for the perfect autumn centerpiece are just limitless!

For this inspirational shoot, I wanted to show the different simple ways one can take advantage of all the beauty that autumn offers using some of my favorite vessels from Pottery Barn: the Vintage Wood Footed Bowl, Voluminous Vases and Recycled Glass Vases.

Using these simple and lovely glass vases in different sizes and shapes and this beautiful wooden pedestal, I came up with a few centerpieces that can adorn an autumn table for any occasion — from an escort card table for a wedding, to everyday entertaining.

Here, I used dahlia, amaryllis, ilex, pepper, privette, raspberry and artichoke.

I simply grouped my flowers in a single variety and took advantage of their beauty in their individual vases clustered next to each other.

This wooden pedestal is so lovely that I decided to create a full floral arrangement in it. It’s pretty shallow, so I placed a wooden bowl on top of it and then created an arrangement inside the bowl using a floral frog. I think this makes for a lovely centerpiece or statement piece for pretty much any occasion — don’t you?

Here, I used garden rose, spray rose, ranunculus, poppy, iresine plant (the red leaves), carnation, eucalyptus, nodding abutilon, dusky bells, fuchsia, and firethorn berries.

What’s your favorite autumn centerpiece?

Halloween Gone Mad: Black, Silver and Green Halloween Decorating Ideas

This month, the uber-talented Karson Butler Events and Laura Hooper Calligraphy teamed up to host a Halloween-inspired calligraphy workshop at Karson Butler’s beautiful studio in Washington DC. We love their unique Halloween decorating ideas!

2_HalloweenStyledShoot-109

The playful decorations (including our Mercury Pumpkins and Periodic Cocktail Platter) go beyond the standard orange and black palette. “Our color palette included blacks, silvers and green,” says Emily Butler. “We wanted to steer clear of traditional orange and do something a bit different.”

2_HalloweenStyledShoot-43

The best part about the mercury pumpkins they used? They work well all season long — Thanksgiving, almost up until Christmas! “We’re already planning an autumnal look of mixed metallics for our Thanksgiving table,” Emily says.

Stunning flowers and greenery from Victoria Clausen Florals, mixed with some strategically placed dry ice and beakers add the perfect finishing touch.

Consider your room’s architecture. Choose a nook for your desk, like Palm Beach Lately did with our Bedford Rectangular Desk. We love how this stylish duo made use of existing architecture (what would otherwise be an awkward space in the room) to create their home office.

Add light with mirrored furniture. Nicole Ciotti chose our Park Mirrored Bedside Table for her adorable bedroom and placed it next to a window to reflect light and space.

Two is always better than one. When all else fails, stick to symmetry, even in outdoor spaces. Lifestyle LA‘s outdoor seating area with two of our Palmer Rope Chairs looks balanced and serene.

Be playful. Decor doesn’t always have to be so serious! Copper & Walnut did just that with this fun but chic vignette featuring our Lily Task Table Lamp.

Think outside the box. Does a bedside lamp always have to be a table lamp? Jenifer Janniere answered that question with a resounding “NO” in this beautiful bedroom featuring our Madison Glass Sconces.

Functional can be beautiful. Hardwearing spaces like entryways can shine, too. Sarah Dorsey took that to heart in her amazing entryway makeover. Our Eleana Recycled Glass Bud Vases are the perfect finishing touch.

All white doesn’t mean all bland. We love how Elizabeth Camp mixed up her crisp white and navy Grand Embroidered Duvet with our Silk Channel Quilt and a splash of pattern on her curtains.

Pattern me pretty. Belle Maison knows the trick to mixing patterns just perfectly: stick to the same color palettes, and add in a dash of the unexpected — like our Alana Printed Pillow brings to this geometric mix.

3 Easy Tips to Refresh All White Bedding

Decorating, How-To | | | 5 Replies

This post was written exclusively for Inside & Out by Jana Bek of Jana Bek Design.

A white duvet offers you a ton of versatility to change up the look of your bed as your tastes change. For this reason, white bedding and duvets are my go-to for clients’ bedroom designs and in my own home.

I love using all-white duvets that have an accent or border for a pop of hue and added interest. I’m using my new Pottery Barn Pearl Embroidered Duvet to show you how to layer on pattern and color to make this staple duvet even more beautiful!

1. Pick Your Palette

Photo1

I recommend finding a multicolored pillow you love and use it as your anchor.  In my master bedroom, the vintage barkcloth floral pillows are tying all of the happy hues together. Then, coordinate your other pillows to your anchor pillow.

2. Pattern Play

Photo3

To create interest, vary the pattern types in your throw pillows — here I have the navy dot pillows, floral, then the graphic Greek key lumbar. You could also do solid pillows, floral and a geometric or stripe print. This rule also ensures the prints do not compete or look redundant.

3. Size it Up

Photo4

I often get asked: What sizes (and how many) pillows I recommend for styling a bed? For a queen/full, I do two, 24-by-24 inch pillows in the back, then two, 20-by-20 inch pillows, and a lumbar or bolster pillow in the front. For a king, it’s the same, except I recommend three, 24-by-24 pillows in the back. To make sure your pillows are nice and full, buy an insert that is one size larger than your pillow cover — so, for a 24-by-24 pillow cover, use a 24-by-24 pillow insert.

Drape a colorful throw at the end of your bed and resist diving in to your gorgeous design!

Easy, Chic Styling for Small Console Tables

Styling is harder than it looks — somehow, even copying a catalog photo move for move still doesn’t always turn out right. We love Interior Designer Jana Bek‘s approach to styling — relax, and have fun with it! When you take a happy, natural approach to styling your home, it’ll feel natural and happy — even if it’s not catalog perfect.

Take a peek at Jana’s easy styling tips for small console tables in an entry — one of the hardest parts of the home to tackle. Then, start stocking up on decor so you can practice and play in your own home!

Easy Chic Styling for Small Console Tables

Smentry4

Even if you have a petite console you want to style, it can still pack a pretty punch!

Height always adds interest, so with a narrow table, a tall plant, (like the orchid seen in this Wichita Falls client’s home) accomplishes that without overwhelming the table, as a lamp might. Pottery Barn frames are another go–to of mine for height, as they have a few beautiful styles with interesting borders, like the pearl inlaid one seen here, which adds additional height to an 8×10 frame.

SmEntry1

If you are buying items online for a smaller space – pay close attention to dimensions – this Pottery Barn mercury tray is actually a vanity tray; just large enough to stash keys and small clutter.

Suggested decorative items:
Mother of Pearl Picture Frames, Brynn Mirrored Tray, Live Orchid, Clementine Homescent Collection
