When a client of mine shared the wonderful news that she was expecting (and for the first time), I quickly became very excited to create the perfect nursery! Because the couple decided to wait until the baby’s birth to find out gender, we needed to craft a space that would work whether it was a boy or girl.
This room started out like most nursery conversions – as a guest room. With a little one on the way, the guest room moved to the office, and the space was cleared to make room for baby!
We really wanted this nursery to feel calm and traditional with a modern twist. The original paint color was a little dark, so we transformed the walls with a barely there gray, and the room brightened instantly.
Two walls of the room had windows, yet the room still felt dreary! We removed the blinds and added white Twill Blackout Roman Shades to each window (they’re cordless – safe for kids!). For extra pizzazz, we attached rainbow-colored pom-pom trim to the bottom of each shade. I love how that little detail added a “this is a kid’s room” punch!
I didn’t want to clutter each window with curtains, so we got the double-width Peyton Drapes in ivory. Because the space is overall neutral, the white and ivory window treatments layered beautifully to create softness. To tie in the wall color, I chose the grey Dawson Rug – it is plush and gorgeous! I have four little ones of my own, and I know a good kid’s room rug when I see it. That rug is m-a-d-e for kids! You can tell it’s going to hold up great through the years.
The Kendall Crib was a perfect choice because of its classic simplicity, and the Reese Bedding tied in perfectly with the couple’s first baby gift, a giant giraffe!
Did you notice the darling Origami Mobile? It connected with the bedding in a sweet, subtle way.
The acrylic drapery rods and gold hardware were a DIY using this tutorial, and I’ll have all the details on how we made them on A Storied Style next week!
Art for this room was really important to give the nursery life and personality. Each print was chosen with care and framed in the White Gallery Frames. (By the way, I was super impressed with the quality of these frames! The mats are cut very well, and the frame is nice and heavy.)
The placement of the mirror keeps the changing table wall more playful (plus you can make silly faces with baby in the reflection!).
I feel so happy whenever I think about this room. It turned out even better than I imagined, and the parents were so thrilled with their nursery!
For more information on how I created this space (including the gold-striped ceiling – spoiler: it’s contact paper!), stay tuned to A Storied Style next week.
P.S. Joy, oh JOY, it’s a BOY! Meet precious Reeves.
