Sometimes, a room doesn’t need an overhaul, but just a little refresher to give it a new look. Revamping our girls’ shared bedroom is a project I’ve started and stopped several times over the last two years – maybe that’s why I felt like it just never came together. So, I decided to give their beds a fresh look with new sheets, shams and duvets.
We made these easy DIY headboard panels as the starting point for the room. While they add a fun dose of color and pattern, I’ve found the headboard fabric and red ceiling insist on being the stars of the show. But that doesn’t mean there’s no room for mixing in pattern and playful touches.
How I created this look:
I went with overall neutral bedding. Since we chose a fun color for the ceiling and a pretty busy fabric for the headboards, it was important that the bedding didn’t compete, or make the room feel too busy. So, I went with a classic white-and-gray combo. The girls’ artsy creations and prized possessions also add color to the room.
I mixed and matched patterns and bedding collections. I rarely buy bedding sets because I love the look of mixing and matching, especially in kids’ rooms. I went with the gray mini dot sheets for a subtle pattern against the bolder headboard. I also browsed both the girls’ and boys’ bedding products for a custom look. I paired the ruffle sham with the rugged canvas duvet to keep things from looking too sweet.
I kept the bedding simple, not adding too many layers. Although I’m not much of an enforcer when it comes to making their beds, I still think it’s good to keep kids’ bedding pretty minimal. I eliminated the blankets that were previously there, which left two layers—sheets and duvets with fairly light inserts.
I added an unexpected accent color. Kids’ rooms are the perfect place to play with a fun color that you might not try elsewhere in your home. I added a touch of teal with some accent pillows on the beds, and I painted a little vanity I found at a local thrift store.
I added texture with a soft area rug. I used the chenille jute rug to provide a soft spot for the girls to play. (The 5 x 8′ size fit perfectly between the two beds.) The subtle chevron design brings in just enough pattern. I also love the rug’s weight – it stays put without wrinkling up, no matter what kind of chaos is happening in their room.
