A Romantic Anniversary Picnic by the Lake

Angela from Red Shoes Creative recently sent us photos from this sweet first anniversary picnic. She told us, “I wanted to make this evening really special. Even though we couldn’t afford to do something extravagant, you don’t need a ton of money to make a truly memorable occasion… a little creativity goes a long way.”

We love Angela’s inspired anniversary picnic. She notes, “We just celebrated our first anniversary, and we were on a budget. What better way to celebrate in a meaningful way than a cozy, romantic picnic by the lake?”

Angela created a tent with mosquito netting and used vintage picnic blankets for the floor. A tablecloth, baskets with vintage kitchen towels to keep the wine cool and bread warm were also practical additions. She layered the space with generous numbers of pillows so she and her husband, could, in her words, “comfortably linger in the magical space as long as possible.”

Angela told us, “Then I pulled out a bunch of the wedding gifts we received from our Pottery Barn registry, plus some other Pottery Barn pieces already in my collection to set the perfect tablescape. Included in the setting are dip bowls from the Great White collection, basic white plates from the Caterer’s Box collection, a snack bowl, salt and pepper shakers, a cheese knife from the Antique Silver collection, Pottery Barn rope chargers and the Pottery Barn champagne flutes we used on our wedding day. I also used a Rhodes drink dispenser stand as a cake stand and filled a PB sphere vase with the lovely flowers my husband gave me as an anniversary gift.”

“To make it even more special and personalized, I wrapped our flatware in vintage kitchen towels and added a simple daisy. I tied them up with left-over elements from our save-the-date cards (drawings that my niece did of myself and my then-fiance that we used in our wedding theme).” Angela revealed.

“To finish it off, I surrounded the tent with 20 white votive candles in clear glass holders,” Angela told us. “I added three to the table and it was simply romance at its best when the sun went down.”
