Embracing the Dog Days of Summer …

We love Monica Lavin, of the blog Lavin Label for her effortless takes on coastal living.  It’s why we invited Monica to help us celebrate the last days of warm temperatures and balmy evenings.  While the temperature may be dropping, it doesn’t mean you need to stop enjoying your outdoor space.  Even though Labor Day has come and gone, make the most of September and follow these tips from Monica on how to get the most from your outdoor space, large or small!

As soon as I feel the drop in humidity and temperatures, I’m eager to decorate my home for fall and run to my local coffee shop for pumpkin spiced lattes. Who’s with me?! Even though it still might be a bit too early to set out real pumpkins and bales of straw on my front porch, I still bring fall elements into my home through patterns and decorative (faux) pumpkins.

One way that I celebrate the start of fall is by creating a cozy outdoor retreat for the family. It’s the perfect time, especially in the south, to spend the evenings under the stars (or twinkling lights)! My husband and I take full advantage of the ideal temps and enjoy our casual dinners outdoors. It’s the perfect opportunity to add fall-inspired touches to your patio!

Go Buffalo. Buffalo check is a popular pattern suited for fall. Try bringing in this classic black and white check through dinner napkins , plates and pillows . You can bring in other autumnal colors such as yellow, burnt orange or hunter green through flowers and throws.

Hang String Lights . String lights aren’t just for the summer. They’re perfect for breezy fall nights, too! I love to use lighting to help set the mood and these lights really add energy to any gathering.

Incorporate Lanterns . Candle-lit lanterns perfectly compliment string lights and an outdoor fire. Lanterns are a great way to add just the right amount of lighting to a dining table. Try using a grouping of candles (such as two or three) rather than just one candle in a lantern to add more dimension.

Serve Fall Favorites. One of the easiest appetizers that screams fall is Rosemary and Maple Pecans. The hint of cinnamon and brown sugar make this a family favorite. And for the adult guests, offer them an Apple Cider Rosé Sangria. I hate to say goodbye to Rosé season so adding apple cider, brandy and cinnamon sticks to this light wine perfectly transitions it to fall.
