ADVICE & INSPIRATION

Choosing The Perfect Paint Color

We are loving this bedroom refresh designed by Ashley Pepitone from Camp Makery!  Armed with some of our new textiles and Sherwin Williams’ new fall paint palette, Ashely gave her master suite a new look for the season. There are several key elements to a successful refresh, but to start we’re taking a peek into her tips for choosing the perfect paint color. Take it away Ashley!

Probably the most daunting aspect of designing a room is choosing the wall color. Paint isn’t as easy to change as a duvet or some drapes, so it’s easy to be anxious that you’re going to make the wrong choice. My best word of advice: Pick the paint color last.

Tempting as it may be to just get it done at the outset, you will almost always regret choosing your paint color first. By picking linens and artwork you really love before paint, you are giving yourself the best opportunity to ensure that everything looks cohesive and well-planned.

Choose your textiles first. Once you have your linens, fabrics, drapes and maybe a piece of art or two chosen, gather them all together and sit down with them in front of you. When you look at them together, what are the common hues between them? What color really jumps out at you the most?

After you know what general color family really speaks to you most, try to match it in a paint swatch book or in the store. I have a Sherwin-Williams swatch book that comes in very handy for this step! Now, this is important. Once I find the shade I love, unless it is already super light, I go two or three shades lighter and that is what I put on the walls. If you can’t figure out what color that would be in your swatches, bring the paint chip to the sales associate and ask them to mix your color but “cut it” by 25 or 50%. Purchase a sample first if you’re not sure.

The last thing to consider is texture. Sherwin-Williams offers a “true matte” in their Emerald paint line that is perfect for the bedroom. It looks soft and velvety on the walls. I was excited to try something other than eggshell or flat, and it did not disappoint!
