Get Ready For Autumn: Fall Decorating Inspiration

Decorating, Inspiration | | | Leave a comment

On a recent lunch stop at Napa’s gorgeous new restaurant The Thomas, we couldn’t help but linger at the restaurant’s windowsill displays, which boasted a bounty of autumnal decorating inspiration.

The sills were filled with a mix of cut glass vessels, antique blue books, and seasonal plants in orange, white, and wheat colors. The puffy dried florals in this photo are actually artichokes that have gone to seed. The orange pods may be more recognizable to most readers — they are Physalis alkekengi, more commonly known as Chinese lantern plants.

The color scheme for these vignettes is simultaneously a departure from and a reflection on traditional autumnal palette. The orange and wheat tones are classically fall, while the white and navy blue add modern pop to the look.

To try this look at home, we suggest the following

  • Head to the farmer’s market or local grocer to discover some unusual squash or pumpkin. Try turban, Lakota or Baby Boo squash, and white pumpkins such as the Casper pumpkin.
  • Try elevating the pumpkins or gourds in glass dishes, or framing them under one of our Glass Domes.
  • Purchase a bouquet of Chinese lanterns from the florist.
  • Take a walk in your neighborhood to find grasses or bushes that have gone to seed, and turned that delightful wheat-like color.
  • Stack similarly colored books together for your tablescape vignette or window display. You don’t have to stick with navy blue. Try black books for a more Halloween-themed vignette or add girly contrast with bright pink volumes. We also love the idea of purple, turquoise or deep brown books.

How-To: Arrange Mini Bouquets in Our Wooden Terrarium

Decorating, How-To | | | 1 Reply

Kiana, owner of Tulipina, a boutique San Francisco-area floral design studio (see more of her work here and here) recently experimented with adding some out-of-the-box floral arrangements to the Pottery Barn Wooden Terrarium. The results? As usual, gorgeous.

Kiana writes, “One might usually put some potted green plants or herbs in a terrarium, but I wanted to put together something that would work well both open and closed, and that would catch the eye with color even from the corner of a large room.”

For this arrangement, she chose chestnut, sweet pea, craspedia, begonia, blushing bride, and maidenhair fern for her small vessels. To learn how to re-create the look at your home and in your Pottery Barn terrarium, check out the full post here.

The Celeste Chandelier in a Charming Cottage Dining Room

Clarita, who blogs at The Cottage at 341 South, has a home graced with gorgeous style. We love her dining room, which is illuminated with the Pottery Barn Celeste Chandelier.

Clarita told us, “The Celeste Chandelier was a perfect fit for our dining room for many reasons! When my husband and I were remodeling our hundred-year old cottage, we wanted to preserve the aged, weathered look of the home but add updated function and style. There were many great textures to the room already, including the hardwood floor, the brick fireplace, and the wide baseboard trim, and we were searching for the perfect light to add to the room. When we found the Celeste chandelier it was a delightful fit! It adds a touch of glamour to the room without being overwhelming, but also ties in beautifully with the older look already present.”

Amanda at The Fashionable Hostess recently shared some lovely images from a champagne celebration tablescape that has us ready to raise our glasses in a formal toast.

Amanda writes, “There are so many occasions to celebrate – engagements, promotions, birthdays – and there is no better way to say ‘Congrats’ than with a Champagne Toast. I love to be the one to celebrate my friends and family successes when these exciting times arise, but putting together a full blown dinner party can get exhausting. Fortunately I found a happy medium – “A Champagne Celebration.”

For this celebration, Amanda curated a simple appetizer menu with a cheese platter, fresh baked olive bread and olives, accompanied by the best bubbly.

She noted, “For the table, a simple black and white theme with a minimalist floral arrangement and minimal plates and silverware — because I would rather we focus our efforts on the sipping anyways.”

Amanda chose the PB Great White Square Plates for the party, which fit perfectly into the table scheme.

Before and After: A Light and Lovely Family Room Makeover

Brad of Brad Ramsey Interiors recently shared a great family room project that updated and beautified a home. Here’s a before shot of the room:

And here’s Brad’s lovely results.

Brad told us, “I was charged with designing a cozy family room for a family of four with two active teenage boys and two dogs. The challenge was to make the space beautiful for mom to enjoy, but not over the top or too flowery so the rest of the family would feel comfortable in it as well.”

Brad goes on to note, “I was excited to find several key pieces for the room from Pottery Barn. I layered a  Zonia Ikat Dhurrie Rug over a 9′x12′ Owen Herringbone Jute Rug to create a foundation for the rest of the colors and textures in the room. Add to that the rustic Hastings Reclaimed Wood Coffee Table and the Caden Nailhead Leather Stool floating over by the fireplace, and you can see how the Pottery Barn pieces add much of the character and texture to this room. And the most important part, my client loves it!”
