Mystery Box Challenge: Modern Moments Designs’ Colorful Tiki Cocktail Party

Entertaining, Parties | | | 7 Replies

We challenged 5 of our favorite entertaining bloggers to create the ultimate home bar, inspired by their signature cocktail and favorite pieces from our summer collection. Today, we’re featuring the fantastic design from Jessica Wilcox at Modern Moments Design. We asked Jessica about her inspirations for this design as well as her secrets to hosting a great cocktail party.

Jessica Wilcox - Image 1 Main Image

What was your inspiration and theme for your cocktail party?

The Pottery Barn colors this season are so bright and colorful. I knew there had to be a fun way to incorporate a variety of colors into one cohesive theme. Plus, I was loving all the textures and rope details. A Tiki Bar theme was the perfect way to incorporate bright colors, cocktail parties, and summer alike.

Jessica Wilcox - Image 2

Which Pottery Barn products really made this party pop?

I honestly loved all the products I used, but one of my favorites was the Mason Jar Drink Dispenser and colorful Rhodes Turquoise Drink Dispenser Stand. There’s just something timeless about mason jars and for this party I was really going for a 1970′s feel and I think it was the perfect fit.

Jessica Wilcox - Image 3

What do you think are the most special or unique details from your cocktail party?

The beautiful tropical florals definitely set the tone, but I love how all the paper products and graphics tie the whole party together. On their own, they are cute, but with the Pottery Barn products and beautiful florals, they are perfectly paired.

Jessica Wilcox - Image 4

What’s your favorite summer spot for staging a cocktail party?

I’d love to stage a party at a backyard pool, but here in Oregon not very many people have private pools. Someday, I will have one and we will be able to throw an epic pool party!

Jessica Wilcox - Image 5

What’s your favorite way to elevate a cocktail and turn it from ho-hum to fabulous?

Garnish. It’s that simple. Any sort of garnish whether it is a colorful sugar rim or a delicate candy swizzle stick, a garnish can take the most basic drink and make it look fabulous.

We asked Lauren about her inspirations for this design as well as her secrets to hosting a great cocktail party.

Lauren Borquez - Image 2

What was your inspiration and theme for your cocktail party?

My inspiration for my entire design was derived from a single piece that was sent to me. The adorable little whale bottle opener took the wheel and a nautical/ coastal theme was born!

Lauren Borquez - Image 3

Which Pottery Barn products really made this party pop?

I loved the drink servers and the coordinating glassware in blue.

Lauren Borquez - Image 5

What do you think are the most special or unique details from your cocktail party?

Theme selection is always important to me and having a sense of continuity on a dessert table. I try to bring everything together. A couple of my favorite details were the detailed cookies that matched the printables as well as the fondant whale topper that matched the bottle opener.

Lauren Borquez - Image 1 Main Image

What’s your favorite summer spot for staging a cocktail party?

I love for settings to have an at home, relaxed feel. Almost any outdoor scene can be transformed into a fun, festive get a way as long as the key ingredients are there.

Lauren Borquez - Image 4

What’s your favorite way to elevate a cocktail and turn it from ho-hum to fabulous?

I think that execution and attention to even the smallest of details is the key to pulling off any size event. Balance is also important visually speaking.

Mystery Box Challenge: Sugar and Charm’s Classically Cool Cocktail Party

Entertaining, Parties | | | 1 Reply

We challenged 5 of our favorite entertaining bloggers to create the ultimate home bar, inspired by their signature cocktail and favorite pieces from our summer collection. Today, we’re featuring the fantastic design from Eden Passante at Sugar and Charm. We asked Eden about her inspirations for this design as well as her secrets to hosting a great cocktail party.

Eden Passante - Image 1 Main Image

What was your inspiration and theme for your cocktail party?

For my cocktails I created a Blackberry Salty Dog and one of my favorite summer cocktails, Spiked Lemonade garnished with blackberries and strawberries. The cocktails were the perfect foundation for a blackberry and strawberry-colored theme! I wanted to keep it simple and classic for everyday backyard entertaining.

Eden Passante - Image 2

Which Pottery Barn products really made this party pop?

All of the products are simply gorgeous for outdoor entertaining! For my design, the large drink dispenser filled with lemonade, fresh strawberries and blackberries added a burst of color to the bar. The red-bottom cups were also a favorite and I love the pop of color they gave to the design. I also enjoyed filling the galvanized bucket with red and dark purple flowers, which added fresh decor and went with the blackberry and strawberry theme.

Eden Passante - Image 3

What do you think are the most special or unique details from your cocktail party?

The twigs used to garnished the Blackberry Salty Dog are unique and a very charming detail. I also created simple drink sticks for the spiked lemonade using a wooden skewer and Washi tape! Serving popsicles on ice is sweet and looks beautiful. Adding red and purple (two colors people don’t use together very often!) flowers to the lanterns and the galvanized bucket created splashes of color around the bar.

Eden Passante - Image 4

What’s your favorite summer spot for staging a cocktail party? (Lakeside, backyard, etc.)
If we lived close to a lake, I would love to throw cocktail parties lakeside! But since, we live in the city a nice, lush backyard works best. You can make any space special with details and charming touches.

Eden Passante - Image 5

What’s your favorite way to elevate a cocktail and turn it from ho-hum to fabulous?

Adding a special ingredient to it and garnishing! You can take a simple cocktail and add a unique twist to it to customize it to your theme or preference. For instance, the Blackberry Salty Dog is a spin-off of the original Salty Dog Cocktail. Adding fresh muddle blackberries provides a unique touch and customizes it to a summer party.  Always garnish your cocktails too! Drink sticks, fruit, sugar or salt… the details matter.

Mystery Box Challenge: Hi Sugarplum’s Fiesta-Themed Cocktail Party

Entertaining, Parties | | | Leave a comment

We challenged 5 of our favorite entertaining bloggers to create the ultimate home bar, inspired by their signature cocktail and favorite pieces from our summer collection. Today, we’re featuring the fantastic design from Cassie Freeman from Hi Sugarplum. We asked Cassie about her inspirations for this design as well as her secrets to hosting a great cocktail party.

Cassie Freeman - Image 5

What was your inspiration and theme for your cocktail party?

Being a native Texan, I’ve always been a fan of Mexican decor and style. Not to mention the food! In fact, I decorated our Pool Bathroom in full Hacienda style. When it came to the challenge, I immediately thought of margaritas, and the bright colors and style of a Fiesta Party. Any excuse for chips and guacamole, right?!

Which Pottery Barn products really made this party pop?

I love the reds, oranges, and yellows of the outdoor tumblers, trays, and bowls. Paired with bright linens, and colorful drinks, the party was already festive without me having to do much more!

Cassie Freeman - Image 1 Main Image

What do you think are the most special or unique details from your cocktail party?

My favorite little touch is using recycled salsa cans as vases for cheery sunflowers. And small things, like slicing lemons and limes for the drink dispenser let guests know you are excited about having them over.

Cassie Freeman - Image 2

What’s your favorite summer spot for staging a cocktail party?

We are fortunate enough to have a pool, with a new Outdoor Room, so virtually all our entertaining and family time is spent in the backyard. We’ve made it comfortable by installing an outdoor ceiling fan, and have plenty of cushy seats. In the evening, we sit under the twinkle lights and gather around the grill and fire pit. It’s the perfect summer night!

Cassie Freeman - Image 3

What’s your favorite way to elevate a cocktail and turn it from ho-hum to fabulous?

All you need is a pretty garnish, or fun straw. Even a glass of lemonade is fancy with a lemon wedge and paper umbrella!

Mystery Box Challenge: Creating Couture Parties’ Whale-Inspired Cocktail Party

Entertaining, Parties | | | 2 Replies

We challenged 5 of our favorite entertaining bloggers to create the ultimate home bar, inspired by their signature cocktail and favorite pieces from our summer collection. Today, we’re featuring the fantastic design from Stephanie Frazier Grimm at Creating Couture Parties. We asked Stephanie about her inspirations for this design as well as her secrets to hosting a great cocktail party.

Stephanie Frazier Grimm - Image 5

What was your inspiration and theme for your cocktail party?

The whale shaker of course! Living by the ocean my whole life, I am drawn to anything nautical. Any time I design a party, it seems to have a beachy flare to it.

Stephanie Frazier Grimm - Image 3

Which Pottery Barn products really made this party pop?

I think keeping with the nautical theme of navy, red and blue and using the red napkins bring this table together and make it inviting. Adding the surprise details of the whale bottle opener, whale cocktail shaker, and lanterns really create the beachside experience I want my guests to enjoy.

Stephanie Frazier Grimm - Image 4

What do you think are the most special or unique details from your cocktail party?

I love the fact Pottery Barn products can be used for a sit down dinner party, or a lakeside camp out. Also being able to have them as staples (for example the galvanized carry all) to be used for many things, like on this inspiration it was used as a beer cooler!

Stephanie Frazier Grimm - Image 2

What’s your favorite summer spot for staging a cocktail party?

Of course the beach! Being in Newport, RI, it’s everywhere, so any place that has a harbor view with boats in the background gets me excited to entertain!

Stephanie Frazier Grimm - Image 1 Main Image

What’s your favorite way to elevate a cocktail and turn it from ho-hum to fabulous?

Fresh ingredients! Adding fresh herbs, or freshly squeezed fruit to a cocktail will certainly bring that refreshing flavor that accompanies the relax feeling of the beach.

Sharon’s PB Square Sectional Provides the Perfect Seating For Her Home

Decorating, Inspiration | | | Leave a comment

Sharon recently shared photos of her living room with us through Share Your PB Style, and we’re excited to feature her living room on the blog today. Sharon, a realtor and stager, lives in Reston, VA, just outside of Washington D.C. We caught up with her to see why she decided to decorate with the PB Square Sectional in her living room.

interior16

How would you describe your style?

“Relaxed, casual. Clean lines are preferred.”

Why did you choose the PB Square Sectional?

“We moved to our current home from a townhome. It had a traditional floor plan and we had properly scaled furniture pieces to fit the space. Every effort was made to use said furniture in the new place. We lived with our little leather love seat in the large living room as long as we could. When friends came, it just seemed like there was nowhere to sit. So we embraced the challenge of seeking out the right piece. It provides comfortable seating for several people. The ottoman can serve as extra seating as well. The shape really worked with the flow of the room.”

DSCN1590

We love how open this room is! What was challenging about working with an open space? What was rewarding?

“We also love the openness of the space. It did present some decorating challenges, though. There is a fireplace, sliding doors and a wooded view — none of which could be obstructed. And, this room opens to the dining area — yet another consideration. What we needed in this case  was an objective third party to find just the right seating for this room. I enlisted the help of the in-home design service of my local Pottery Barn. They asked thoughtful questions : How do you use the room, how many people do you need seating for, any children or pets, is your style more formal or more casual, etc.. So, based on all considerations, this sectional is working out  perfectly. It does not overwhelm the room or block the view or walkways or fireplace. We are very happy with this piece!

This was the first time I had engaged the PB in-home decorating service. The two women were wonderful to work with. We discussed what pieces would remain in the room, what our style was like, how many people typically use the room. They took careful measurements and left a written estimate. They also made great suggestions to further enhance the space such as a low bench below the window as extra seating, if needed. We had one in a guest room that fit the bill perfectly. They also suggested moving the PB Metro console table from the foyer to behind the couch for a new look.

I have recommended the services to others who may have a design dilemma!”

DSCN1591

What other PB items did you use in the room? Why did you choose them?

“We chose neutral fabric so that accessories could easily be changed. There are currently a few Pottery Barn pillows and a very cozy throw on the couch. These accessories are of good quality and are timeless. When the seasons change, the pillow covers can be easily changed for a different look. The PB Tuscan urns sitting beside the fireplace are also versatile pieces. Earlier this spring, they held flowering branches and last fall, autumn leaves.”

Why do you like to shop at Pottery Barn?

“I enjoy shopping at my local PB because the staff really knows the merchandise. They make suggestions about different ways to use items.I often attend the free decor classes and always come away with new, fresh ideas.”

A Romantic Anniversary Picnic by the Lake

Entertaining, Parties | | | 2 Replies

Angela from Red Shoes Creative recently sent us photos from this sweet first anniversary picnic. She told us, “I wanted to make this evening really special. Even though we couldn’t afford to do something extravagant, you don’t need a ton of money to make a truly memorable occasion… a little creativity goes a long way.”

We love Angela’s inspired anniversary picnic. She notes, “We just celebrated our first anniversary, and we were on a budget. What better way to celebrate in a meaningful way than a cozy, romantic picnic by the lake?”

IMG_1181

Angela created a tent with mosquito netting and used vintage picnic blankets for the floor. A tablecloth, baskets with vintage kitchen towels to keep the wine cool and bread warm were also practical additions. She layered the space with generous numbers of pillows so she and her husband, could, in her words, “comfortably linger in the magical space as long as possible.”

IMG_1168

Angela told us, “Then I pulled out a bunch of the wedding gifts we received from our Pottery Barn registry, plus some other Pottery Barn pieces already in my collection to set the perfect tablescape. Included in the setting are dip bowls from the Great White collection, basic white plates from the Caterer’s Box collection, a snack bowl, salt and pepper shakers, a cheese knife from the Antique Silver collection, Pottery Barn rope chargers and the Pottery Barn champagne flutes we used on our wedding day. I also used a Rhodes drink dispenser stand as a cake stand and filled a PB sphere vase with the lovely flowers my husband gave me as an anniversary gift.”

IMG_1182

“To make it even more special and personalized, I wrapped our flatware in vintage kitchen towels and added a simple daisy. I tied them up with left-over elements from our save-the-date cards (drawings that my niece did of myself and my then-fiance that we used in our wedding theme).” Angela revealed.

IMG_1184

“To finish it off, I surrounded the tent with 20 white votive candles in clear glass holders,” Angela told us. “I added three to the table and it was simply romance at its best when the sun went down.”

IMG_1186

It truly looks like a magical night! We love this idea. Tell us — how have you celebrated a special anniversary? Share stories and photos with us at Share Your PB Style.
