How-To: Create a Custom Chalkboard Thanksgiving Menu

Decorating, DIY, Holiday and tagged , , | | | 4 Replies

If you’ve put a lot of thought into your Thanksgiving menu, it makes sense to celebrate it. Our favorite way to spread the word is by creating a large-scale menu using our Framed Chalkboard. For our menu this year, we enlisted the help of designer and calligraphy artist Diva Pyari of Linea-Carta, who created a beautiful Thanksgiving menu for us. Even if you don’t have a calligraphy artist in your circle of friends, you can get the look of Diva’s gorgeous handwriting thanks to her Calligraphy Starter Kit. Keep reading to learn the steps and get started on your own Thanksgiving menu.

To try this at home, Diva recommends the following:

  1. Use a t-square ruler to create straight guide lines for the menu.
  2. Then, mark the lines lightly with a pencil. You can also very lightly write in the menu items on each line.
  3. Instead of using chalk, use a chalk pen or chalk marker. Pens or markers give you more control over your writing.

Since the menu is the main star on this chalkboard, use florals or styling that accent but do not obscure the writing on the chalkboard. We chose a mixture of wheat and amaranth that was laid flat on two console tables. We also wrapped a pomegranate and orange winterberry swag in brown ribbon to hang from the edge of the menu.

Have you tried making your own blackboard menu before? Would you try it this year?

Special thanks to Diva Pyari for her incredible work on the menu! Make sure to check out her site and shop for more inspirational ideas.

Give a Little Back This Year When You’re Gifting

Behind the Design, Behind the Scenes and tagged , , | | | 3 Replies

This year, while you’re searching out those perfect gifts for those loved ones on your list, consider gifts that give something back. This year, Pottery Barn is happy to present our special collection of gifts that benefit charities across the country. Learn more about the gifts and see who we think would be the best recipient for each.

Mercury Glass Candle Pot and Votive Set For every Etched Mercury Glass Candle Pot and Votive Set sold, Pottery Barn will donate 50 percent of the purchase price directly to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, helping to support research and treatment for pediatric cancer and other deadly childhood diseases. We think that either the candle pot or diffuser set would be a great gift for a girlfriend with a generous spirit.

Grand Chenille Throw Give new meaning to the term “cozy” when you gift someone this luxurious throw. Why is the Grand Chenille Throw extra cozy? Pottery Barn has partnered with shelters across the country for the Give a Little Hope Campaign, and proceeds raised through the Give a Little Hope products (like this throw) benefit organizations that work to provide temporary and long-term housing for youth and families. We recommend it for those loved ones in your life who are dedicated readers. Imagine wrapping up in it as they dive into their favorite novel or memoir.

Etched Mercury Glass Homescent Gift Basket Set  Another product that benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, we’re in love with the gift basket’s white floral bouquet, which is composed of delicate notes of snow roses, Egyptian jasmine, cotton blossom and crisp bergamot. We can’t think of a nicer gift for a beloved mother-in-law or grandmother.

Mercury Pumpkins and Natural Touches Star in This Reader’s Thanksgiving Decor

Entertaining, Holiday and tagged , | | | 2 Replies
One of our readers, Pam, just sent in some lovely inspirational images from her home, featuring autumn and Thanksgiving-related decor. We hope it inspires your own table and decor this year, too!
What do you love about Thanksgiving?

“I love Thanksgiving because it brings our family together! At present, our family is spread out among three different states, and on this occasion, we are united after months of being apart! We spend the day preparing and enjoying dinner, playing board games, talking, laughing and catching up on our busy lives!”

What are your thoughts for the decor this year for your table?

“The decor this year for our dining table is bringing the outdoors in, rustic mixed with a bit of elegance! Lots of faux leaves, antlers and acorns in combination with Pottery Barn’s mercury pumpkins and natural decorative turkeys! Also, I incorporated Pottery Barn’s plaid table runner in blue, chocolate, cream and rust!”

What do you think are the most important elements for a Thanksgiving table?

“The most important elements for a Thanksgiving table or any table decorations are layering and varying heights, textures and fabrics to add interest. This gives you an opportunity to play with your table and create a ‘scene.'”

Are you hosting this year? What tips or tricks do you have for decorating and entertaining on Thanksgiving?

“I am hosting this year and have always hosted for Thanksgiving. I begin weeks ahead with decorating, which is the fun part for me! The tables are set (breakfast and dining), mantels are decorated, seasonal pillows are on the sofas and the even the front porch is decorated and ready to welcome guests. Entertaining is a family operation:  I will do all the shopping; however, the family as a whole prepares the meal, providing us another opportunity to visit and work together in the kitchen! It’s a bonding experience!”

Why do you shop at Pottery Barn for this holiday?

“I shop at Pottery Barn all the time! You can walk into our home and think you are in Pottery Barn, excluding a few pieces here and there! I always joke that we should have a sign above our front door that reads, ‘Welcome to Pottery Barn’!  I’m a huge fan due to quality and the ability to mix and match fabrics and furniture, and I am always excited to see what new products are coming out next!”

Anna Karenina’s Luxe, Lavish Style

Decorating, Inspiration and tagged , | | | Leave a comment

Opening November 16th, Tolstoy’s novel Anna Karenina is lavishly brought to the screen by director Joe Wright and writer Tom Stoppard. With leading performances by Keira Knightley and Jude Law, Anna Karenina‘s incredible sets and luxurious costume designs help to bring this masterpiece to life

Director Joe Wright struck upon the unique notion that “the action would be taking place within a beautiful decaying theatre, which in itself would be omnipresent, a metaphor for Russian society of the time as it rotted from the inside.” Production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer visited locations, including the condemned Alexandra Palace theatre in London, before deciding to build the entire set from scratch.

Other film locations include the Karenin home, the Oblonsky house, an ice rink, a ball, an opera, a society soirée, and a horse race, as well as snowy landscapes and the train station.

Echoing the film’s elaborate sets are the costumes, which were based on late 19th century imperial Russian designs as well as 1950s European haute couture.

For the Moscow train station scenes, filming was conducted at Didcot Railway Centre in Oxfordshire. To re-create the look of the ice, fog and snow the special effects department relied on materials including paint, paper and paraffin wax.

The look of the film  reflects and heightens the artifice that defined 1870s Russian society. From the costumes to the conversations to the inspired set designs, Anna Karenina promises to be an absolutely memorable visual feast of a film.

Inspired by the look of the film? Here are our suggestions for capturing a bit of the theatrical magic of Anna Karenina  at your home.
